Long COIVD is an infection associated chronic condition that occurs after being infected with the SARS- CoV2 virus. Symptoms persists for at least 3 months manifesting as a continuous, relapsing or remitting progressive disease state affecting one or more organs. It’s important to recognize that long COVID can affect anyone, regardless of age or health status. Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and persists for weeks, months or even years. The most common reported symptoms include chronic fatigue, brain fog and post exertional malaise. Long COIVD may not affect everyone the same way, many symptoms can be difficult to manage or hard to explain making it difficult to diagnosis. Many symptoms overlap with other disease conditions so the appropriate test should be run to rule out other pathologies. There is NO laboratory test to diagnose long COVID.
One of the questions I get asked often is, what can I do to prevent long COVID? Taking preventive measures early in the illness significantly affects the likelihood of developing lasting symptoms. When we support our body during acute illness, we maintain a healthy immune response which minimizes long term consequences. COVID often keeps processes active for longer than desired, resulting in chronic, long-term issues. The prolonged activation of immune responses can contribute to these problems. Begin by practicing good hygiene and ensuring sufficient rest, sleep and proper hydration with electrolytes and minerals. Afterward, prioritize nutrients. Three key antioxidants form the basis for our recovery. There is a powerful synergy between vitamin C, glutathione and vitamin E when it comes to supporting our immune system. Together they form a protective shield for our cells, helping us to stay heathy and resilient. I often start out with a Myers cocktail IV with a dash of vitamin C followed by a push of glutathione and of course don’t forget about Ivermectin and Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN).
If you have long COVID and are no longer in an acute state these nutrients are still just as important, remember they are our foundation. Additional support is needed for the mitochondria and cell membranes to jump start energy production. Our cell membranes take a big hit with COVID. If the cell membranes are no longer working, then we cannot get nutrients inside our cells, and we can’t get waste out of our cells. Both omega 3s and phospholipids are important nutrients to support cell membrane repair. I like to use phosphatidylcholine (PTC) pushes and Omega3s. Mitochondria often called “powerhouses of the cell” are tiny energy factories that play a crucial role in energy production. Our hormones play a crucial role in regulating mitochondria. When our hormones are imbalanced, it can impact mitochondrial function. Mitochondrial dysfunction occurs when the mitochondria don’t work as well as they should due to a disease or condition. Research indicates that the COVID-19 virus, has detrimental effects on hormones thus why chronic fatigue is seen in almost all cases of long COVID. After checking and balancing hormones, support and repair mitochondria. These nutrients include NAD, methylene blue, ALA and CoQ10. One of my favorite therapies for our mitochondria is ozone IVs. This can be coupled with an NAD IV for maximal mitochondrial support.
