Here’s something many people – and even many clinicians – don’t realize fish oil itself does not actually stop inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids are important, but they are only the starting material your body uses to create something else. EPA and DHA are converted into specialized signaling molecules called Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediators (SPMs).
SPMs include resolvins, protectins, and maresins. Their role is very different from typical anti-inflammatory treatments. Instead of suppressing the immune system, they help the immune system complete its job and move into the healing phase. Inflammation is designed to occur in stages. First comes activation – swelling, pain, redness, and immune defense. After the threat is handled, the body should shift into resolution, where immune cells clear damaged tissue and begin repair. SPMs are the biological signal that tells the body: “You can stop the alarm now. It’s time to heal.”
Many chronic health issues are not caused by too much inflammation, but by the body failing to turn inflammation off. This is why some people experience persistent joint pain, lingering fatigue after infections, chronic sinus congestion, recurrent injuries, or autoimmune flares. The immune system is not necessarily overactive; it is simply stuck in a loop and never receives the signal to resolve.
Fish oil can only help if the body can successfully convert EPA and DHA into SPMs. That conversion depends on proper metabolic signaling, mitochondrial function, and balanced oxidative stress. Insulin resistance, aging, chronic infections, and environmental stress can interfere with this process. As a result, someone may faithfully take omega-3 supplements and still see little improvement because the body cannot produce the molecules that actually complete the healing process.
SPM supplements provide those downstream mediators directly. Rather than waiting for the body to make the signal, they supply the signal itself and allow immune cells to shift from defense mode into repair mode. Fish oil improves the environment of the cell membrane, while SPMs restore communication within the immune system. Used together, they support both the foundation and the resolution phase of inflammation.
Healing does not occur when inflammation is simply blocked.
Healing occurs when inflammation is properly resolved.
